The beginning of a new year has a tendency to prompt us to action.
It’s like a doorway that invites us to crossover from one season into something different (and hopefully better).
And during this new season, I find It tends to give us a case of the “I Wanna’s”
See if any of these resound with you:
“I wanna lose weight”
“I wanna spend more time with my family”
“I wanna get out of debt”
The list could go on. My list and your list may or may not have a lot of similarities, but regardless, the ability to carry it out successfully requires an approach that isn’t always natural to our understanding.
Here it is. Drum-roll please:
In order to change the way you live (meaning change your behavior), you have to first change the way you think.
Like I said, that may seem foreign if you just want to start or stop a certain type of behavior.
But without changing the way we think, it’s like the problem that the Apostle Paul was outlining in Romans 7:21-23
“I have discovered this principle of life—that when I want to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong. I love God’s law with all my heart. But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind…”
So what he’s saying is this: if you want to win in your actions, you HAVE TO win first in your mind.
Knowing that, here are two simple keys to empower your thinking:
1 – Think about what you want to be / become.
Decide that you are going to move towards something good, not just away from something bad. And repeatedly replay the positive visual of what you can become. This was a crucial point of breakthrough in my journey. It’s OK to NOT want to be a certain way, but until you can think repeatedly about what you want to become, it will be difficult to find a pathway to greatness.
2 – Think about victory, not defeat.
Feed your mind with stories of overcoming in what you want to achieve. Don’t fill it with stories of defeat and discouragement. This can be difficult in a world that thrives on negativity and bad news, but I promise you that if you will choose to not accept defeat, you will find stories and testimonies of those who have found victory. Look for them until you find them and feed your soul on them.
This is your year. This is your season to see things change for the better.
So for starters, let’s change the way we think.
