David slipped the five stones into his satchel and began to walk back to where his fellow soldiers were standing. For over six weeks the army had basically stood still as they were bombarded by ongoing threats of destruction and terror. David had just joined the frontlines of battle and realized very quickly that something wasn’t right. As he listened to the accusations lobbied against he and his fellow friends and countrymen, he determined that there was only one thing that would bring victory. He had to face Goliath head-on.
A friend of mine and I were talking recently about fear. In the discussion, they were reminding me that in the famous bible story about David and Goliath, that when David showed up on the scene, his brothers, friends and their entire army had gotten stuck.
Because of fear.
What happened was that Goliath, a huge man (historians say he was between 9-10 feet tall) had been intimidating them with his threats for 40 days.
Understand, no one had fought in that battle. Other than with words.
For 40 days, God’s chosen army had listening to the lies and after not doing anything about it, had begun to believe it.
The affect it had them was nothing short of paralyzing.
David had a different approach. Rather than sitting there and listening to the lies and starting to believe they were real (which they weren’t), he did something completely different.
He ran right at the giant, yelling a few verbal challenges of his own. David refused to let his own mouth confess the lies. He spoke the truth.
And in a nutshell…he won. In fact, he won rather quickly. It only took a few minutes. Let that sink in. Some of us today have been listening to the lies for so long, we’ve lost sight of God’s ability to give us quick victory.
Let’s follow his example. Stop believing the lies about you.
Say the truth. Speak out loud the good things you want to happen. Even better, get scripture promises from the bible, and speak those out loud.
And run at your giant. Remember what Joyce Meyer says: it’s ok to “do it afraid”. But don’t do it sitting in a corner afraid to engage your obstacles.
The results will be amazing.
